Participation Moves to New Highs On Rally... But Where is it Coming From?

BPSPX moved to new 2026 highs, but some of the larger high momentum names are still sitting off highs. We discuss the recent developments with today's featured article.

Morning Pulse

NDW Morning Pulse - August 6, 2026

  • Major asset representatives saw muted action during trading on 8/5. Many of the major domestic representatives landed in the red for the day, seeing the likes of the Nasdaq Composite ([NASD], -.83%), Russell 2000 ([RUT], -.59%) or S&P 500 [SPX], -.17%) finish lower on the day. This is normal after the magnitude of upside action this week.
  • The only domestic equity representative to move higher was the Dow Jones Industrial Average ([.DJIA]) which picked up roughly .5% to move one box higher on its default chart. It is now trading in heavily overbought territory, so a pullback to the ~50,000 mark would be normal/constructive on an exhale.
  • On the commodities front, crude ([CL/]) moved lower on its chart. A trip back down to the summer 2026 lows in the upper $60’s wouldn’t be out of the question. Gold advanced roughly 3.7% for the day, pushing higher to test its negative trend line. Even on a break, wait for further technical improvement before considering precious metals exposure.
  • [PH] picked up ~6-8% in premarket trading, pushing to new highs on strong earnings. It remains a high attribute name looking to pick up its 5th technical attribute. [DDOG] slipped as much as 20% in premarket action on poor guidance. It is still up handedly this year but monitor its TA score to see if the decline is enough to mark any relative deterioration. [NET] & [TTWO] report over the next 24 hours (8/6-8/7)- both are high RS options for those of you looking for earnings plays.
  • [NVDA] broke a spread quadruple top to move back into a positive trend on its default chart. It remains quite rangebound, but the upside action for the name certainly doesn’t go unnoticed. From here, the semiconductor giant will look to push back towards ATH’ s arpid $236.

NDW Morning Pulse

Below are highlights from the NDW Morning Update Video for the morning of 08/05. Access the the video on the NDW Morning Update Video page.

  • Market action on 8/4 was overwhelmingly strong. The return profile was nearly identical to that of results from 8/3, seeing the likes of the Russell 2000 (RUT), Nasdaq Composite (NASD) and Emerging Markets (EEM) lead the way each up ~2%. Meanwhile, the US Dollar (DX/Y) and Crude oil fell.
  • Market breadth continues to expand. ^BPSPX, which measures the percentage of S&P 500 stocks trading on buy signals, moved to 2026 highs with yesterday’s action. It has yet to challenge highs from 2024 or 2025, but a breadth “concern” in early 2026 has quickly given way to open Q3.
  • With the breadth expansion, SPXEWI moved to all time chart highs. It’s technical posture remains ironclad as it sits on a string of buy signals with a range of support below. More growth focused NDX returned to a buy signal but has yet to get back to its highs…. Speaking to the magnitude of the recent exhale for growth focused areas.
  • Crude oil slipped back down below the seemingly key lower $80’s/upper $70’s mark on its chart. From here, a journey back down to the recent lows in the upper $60’s wouldn’t be out of the question and would also signal markets pricing in further deescalation in Iran.
  • AMD fell ~8% in premarket trading. It remains a high attribute name but monitor relative peer and market RS charts for changes in technical attribute. LLY advanced, continuing its push towards ATH’s on its chart. It holds a 5/5 TA score. WDC reports after close. The 5% chart highlights support around $425 and some significant resistance around current levels.

Reports as recently as Monday have talked about the difference in performance between mega-cap options and the “rest” of the broad market. Of course, it is easy to look at performance and visually observe the different numbers, but understanding why performance is different can help contextualize the market landscape for conversations with clients. To put it simply, Dorsey Wright uses the term “participation” to observe what cohort of a given universe is driving markets. Most notably, participation can either be broad (lots of stocks moving in the same direction) or narrow (driven by just a handful of  names). Before going further, it is worth noting that performance and participation can diverge… meaning participation can be narrow but markets can improve handedly. These are typically market environments that feel quite fragile- think 2023 where the S&P 500 was driven higher at the hands of seven companies… things were productive but uncomfortably narrow in the moment. A divergence in performance and participation isn’t inherently “wrong” by any means, but can help clue us into market dynamics at any one point in time.

Monday’s report focused on XLG and its recent deterioration on a relative perspective against other areas of the market. To focus more specifically on the largest options, we can observe MEGATEN or MEGAFIVE which focus on the top ten or five largest names by market cap, respectively. MEGATEN (included below) has struggled so far this year, having advanced just over 5% so far in 2026. While the overall technical picture is still defendable, its relative picture leaves much to be desired. A 3.25% RS chart between MEGATEN and the equal weighted S&P 500 shows some relative consolidation between the two, backing off a highpoint of “relative price” since October of 2025. Since those relative highs on 10/29/2025, MEGATEN has gained just 3.5%- far behind the 12% gain for SPX or 16% gain for SPXEWI. This 3.25% chart has been particularly consistent over time, seeing either an RS switching (owning whichever asset sits on an RS buy signal) or a RS reversal strategy (owning whichever asset sits in a column of X’s) best a simple buy and hold portfolio of either asset on its own. Our longer run preference still sits with MEGATEN but the recent relative weakness (outside of the last few days) is certainly worth watching.

We opened this conversation specifically with the idea of participation, which is where we will journey next. ^BPSPX measures the percentage of S&P 500 stocks trading on PnF buy signals on their default chart acting as a decent sign of intermediate term strength for our domestic benchmark. Remember, since our indicator measures the percentage of S&P 500 stocks trading on buy signals, its calculation is completely agnostic of company size. As of 8/4, ^BPSPX sits at 68% signaling that just under seven out of every 10 S&P 500 stocks trades on a buy signal. Note, this is roughly double the metric established at the 2026 lows from March and above those highs established at the start of 2026 All this to say, while waning participation was a bit of a concern throughout Q1 & Q2, it has actually now become a strong point as markets look to get back to all time highs.

As mentioned throughout recent report pieces, there has been a bit of a rotation in leadership momentum is catching onto… evidenced by less high momentum names trading on buy signals. Using data through 8/2, we can construct our own kind of bullish percent calculation using the holdings of MTUM as a universe. Out of the 124 holdings underneath the hood of MTUM, only 51 of the traded on PnF buy signals on their default chart. This equates to roughly 41% of the universe, roughly 25% lower than that of the broader market. This fits in with previous commentary discussed over the last few weeks’ worth of reports that have detailed a rotation away from some of the previous leaders. While the last few days have seen a rather massive upswing from those leaders sending more back to buy signals, keeping tabs on this makeshift bullish percent can be another tool in the toolbox to gauge the strength of high momentum names on market exhales.

Market Distribution Table The Distribution Report below places Major Market ETFs and Indices into a bell curve style table based upon their current location on their 10-week trading band.

The middle of the bell curve represents areas of the market that are "normally" distributed, with the far right being 100% overbought on a weekly distribution and the far left being 100% oversold on a weekly distribution.

The weekly distribution ranges are calculated at the end of each week, while the placement within that range will fluctuate during the week. In addition to information regarding the statistical distribution of these market indexes, a symbol that is in UPPER CASE indicates that the RS chart is on a Buy Signal. If the symbol is dark Green then the stock is on a Point & Figure buy signal, and if the symbol is bright Red then it is on a Point & Figure sell signal.

NDW Spotlight Stock

BNY Bank of New York Mellon Corporation ($158.74) - Banks - BNY has been at least a 3 for 5’er in technical attribute rated stock since November 2023 and 5 for 5’er since September 2024. The stock has maintained a long-term RS buy signal against the market since September 2024 and its banking peer group since April 2023, and BNY currently ranks within the top decile of the Banks sector matrix. BMY has maintained a positive trend since November 2023 and a buy signal since April this year. July’s trading brought a third buy signal as shares reached a high at $162 before consolidation in the $150 range with recent action. Okay to consider in the low $150 to $160 range. The bullish price objective of $192 will serve as the price target, giving the stock a reward to risk ratio greater than 5. The initial stop loss will be set for $130.

EXPE Expedia Group Inc. ($316.56) - Leisure - EXPE broke a double top at $316 to complete a bullish catapult as shares rallied to $324, marking a new all-time chart high. The stock improved to a 5 for 5'er after seeing the peer RS chart return to Xs in the closing days of July. The breakout places EXPE in overbought territory, so those considering will look for consolidation in the lower $300 range along with a normalization of the 10-week trading band before adding. Initial support lies at $288, while the bullish support line sits at $260.
NOW Servicenow Inc ($117.22) - Software - Shares of NOW broke a triple top at $120 for its second consecutive buy signal. The stock has rebounded off of its lows earlier this year, moving into a positive trend and regaining near-term relative strength against both the market and its peers. The now 3 for 5'er still lacks long-term relative strength, making it more of a hold than anything, but investors should keep an eye on the stock for further improvement. From here, initial resistance lies at $124 then $138.
NVDA NVIDIA Corporation ($219.22) - Semiconductors - NVDA moved higher to break a spread quadruple top at $216, marking a fresh buy signal that also carried the stock back into a positive trend. This action promoted NVDA to a 3 for 5'er, up from a 2 for 5'er, moving it into hold territory. Relative strength remains mixed here, however, as the RS chart against the market is still in a column of Os and the stock is on a sell signal against its peers. The weight of the technical evidence is beginning to improve as the trend turns positive and near-term momentum builds, but that improvement is still early. Those with exposure can continue to hold, while those looking to add should wait for relative strength to confirm before committing. Initial support sits at $192.
ORLY O'Reilly Automotive, Inc. ($92.72) - Autos and Parts - ORLY broke a spread quadruple top at $94 for a third buy signal and to clear resistance in the lower $90s. The stock improved to a 3 for 5'er recently after seeing the trend flip back to positive. From here, note resistance in the lower $100 range. Initial support resdides at $87, the bullish support line, while additional can be found in the mid to low $80s.
SHOP Shopify Inc ($147.80) - Retailing - SHOP broke a double top at $134 for a second buy signal as shares rallied to $152 on the chart, marking the highest chart level since January. This break follows the stock shifting back into a positive trend and increasing to a 3 for 5'er in technical attribute rating, while also placing the stock within one box of a market RS buy signal. The breakout places SHOP in overbought territory, so those considering will look for consolidation in the $140 range along with a normalization of the 10-week trading band before adding. Initial support may be seen at prior resistance in the $130 range, while additional lies at $116, the bullish support line.
