Is Technology Breaking the Market?

If you’ve felt like markets are broken recently, then you’re not alone. Today, we look at how to navigate a technology-driven market.

Morning Pulse

NDW Morning Pulse - October 13, 2026

  • Market action was limited over the course of Monday’s trading session, with the only name moving more than 1% in either direction was crude oil ([CL/]) which picked up just over 2%. Towards the downside, emerging markets ([EEM], -.97%), gold ([GC/], -.60%) and the Russell 2000 ([RUT], -.45%) led the way to the downside.
  • None of the major names we look at saw any chart action, although [^TWNYSE] did reverse back up into X’s. Measuring the percentage of NYSE listed stocks trading above their 10-week (50-day) moving average, this indicator is one of the shorter-term measures of participation widely used by the analyst team. While reversals into X’s are positive, it is still worth noting the damage done to more intermediate/long-term measures of participation.
  • Speaking of, ([^PTECSEMI]) reversed into O’s, signaling a decrease in participation within the semiconductor space. Representative [SMH] moved back down into O’s on its default chart as well. While the overall technical picture remains strong, it is worth watching the semiconductor space as a gauge of strength if things decline moving through Q4.
  • Big banks got earnings started up with premarket action on 10/13. In terms of notable movement: [GS] advanced ~3.5% before the bell, [JPM] picked up roughly 1%, [JNJ] declined just under 3% citing medical device weakness stemming from conflict in the Middle East. Other major names to report included [WFC], [C], [UNH].
  • While not earnings related, keep an eye on [CIEN] which would flag as a bullish shakeout pattern with a reversal back into X’s on its chart. [WMT] returned to a buy signal but has shed a lot of strength recently, watch closely for further deterioration. [CRM] is still in the red for the year but trades well off 2026 lows, a trip into the $270’s would not be out of the question if momentum continues to pick up.

Below are highlights from the NDW Morning Update Video for the morning of 10/12/2026. Access the video on the NDW Morning Update Video page.

  • U.S. equity indices were positive Friday (10/9) with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJIA) leading to the upside for the trading day. Among the indices that continue to trade near all-time chart highs are the Nasdaq Composite (NASD), S&P 500 (SPX), and Russell 1000 (RUI), while the Nasdaq-100 (NDX) sits in Os just below highs. The Russell 2000 (RUT) continues to be monitored closely as the index still maintains a sell signal and challenged recent near-term lows.
  •  While Gold (GC/) rose 1.4% during Friday’s (10/9) trading session, the chart didn’t see additional action as it resides in Xs, a couple boxes below a potential buy signal at 4220. The commodity has been on a sell signal since early September and traded within a negative trend since the closing days of September.
  • Emerging markets rebounded on Friday (10/9) but finished the week in negative territory. The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM) reversed into Os  on 10/8 at $66, failing to penetrate near-term resistance in the upper $60s and testing near-term support. EEM has been on a sell signal since July, and additional support can be found at $61.
  • Delta Air Lines (DAL) missed on earnings Friday (10/9), highlighting fuel costs as a major headwind for the quarter. Prior to reporting, the stock returned to a sell signal on 10/8 and shifted back into a negative trend, dropping the stock down to a 3 for 5’er.  From here, support lies in the $76 to $77 range, the September 2026 chart lows.
  • Earnings will pick up this week with major banks being the notable highlights. Below are a few of the notable names reporting in the next couple of days.
    • FedEx Corporation (FDX) – Reports 10/12 – FDX fell to a 2 for 5’er in late September after seeing the trend shift to negative and market RS chart reverse down into Os. Last week’s trading saw the chart reverse back into Xs at $292 after finding a near-term low at $280. While resistance resides near recent chart highs in the $340 range, support currently lies in the $276 to $280 range.
    • UnitedHealth Group (UNH) - Reports 10/13 – UNH has been a 4 for 5’er since August and saw the chart returned to a buy signal at $384 to cap off last week’s trading. From here, resistance lies in the in the upper $390 to $400 range, while support lies in the $360 to $364 range.
    • J.P. Morgan Chase (JPM) – Reports 10/13 – JPM has been a 4 for 5’er since late May this year. The stock moved to a sell signal by breaking a double bottom at $340, completing a bullish signal reversal pattern. Recent action has seen the chart fall down to test support at $328. From here, support beyond current levels resides in the upper $290 to $300 and $280 ranges.

If you’ve felt like markets are broken recently, then you’re not alone. Most days during the last few months, the market will push higher while most participation indicators set new lows. When markets throw a curveball at investors, it can be easy to panic. Years of experience tell you this shouldn’t happen, suddenly leaving you confused at best and directionless at worst. It can be easy to throw up your hands and proclaim, “Everything is broken!” However, taking a step back and understanding what’s causing the change can provide additional context, as well as an idea of how to adapt going forward.

The Great Tech Disconnect

Previous years have seen divergences between the market and the average stock, with 2023 being the most recent extreme. However, few years, if any, have seen as much of a divergence between technology and non-technology stocks. One way to measure this divergence is by evaluating the correlation between the technology and non-technology stocks.

During an average period, there’s around a 70% to 75% correlation between the Select Sector Tech Fund (XLK) and the S&P 500 Ex-Tech & Comm Services Index (SPXXTTSP), meaning that technology usually follows the rest of the market closely. Over the past six months, the correlation between the two groups has been a meager 3%, which is easily the lowest on record. Said differently, technology stocks have essentially moved independently of the rest of the market over the last six months. The previous low in correlation from 25 years ago was still 22%, making recent action an incredibly sharp departure from the last few decades.

Technology-Driven Upside

The second factor causing divergence has been that upside in the market has come almost exclusively from technology. Over the past six months, the S&P 500 ex-tech and comm services index has risen 4.1%. However, that pales in comparison to the 40% return of XLK during that same period. If breadth isn’t tracking technology as closely, and tech is disproportionately responsible for upside, then participation indicators will have a harder time reflecting where cap weighted indices move.

As a side note, the six-month spread of outperformance in favor of tech was as high as 47.1% in September, which is the widest since the start of the dot com bubble in 2000. The AI buildout continues to draw parallels to that period, and with the only comparable period of outperformance coming from then, it does raise a potential sign of caution.

Navigating a Technology-Led Market

With the lack of recent correlation and AI transforming the economy, it may make sense to view technology as somewhat disconnected from the average stock until things normalize. Encouragingly, we have seen an uptick in correlation for technology compared to recent months. The current one-month correlation of tech to non-tech stocks is 35%, which is up from a low of negative 32% in September. That’s also the highest it’s been since the start of May, so it could be on the cusp of returning to normal.

Even assuming things don’t normalize soon, participation can still gauge the health of the average stock and the other nine non-AI major sectors. The equal weight and ex-tech/comm services versions of the S&P 500 have mirrored the decline of most participation indicators over the past several months, despite the abnormal behavior in technology.

Additionally, investors can continue to overweight technology if it remains the primary driver of market gains. Technology handily outperforming other areas of the market isn’t always a bad thing either. There have been six periods, excluding clusters, in which tech beat non-tech stocks by more than 20% in a six-month span (while lower than current levels, it’s still historically high). Even including the lead-up to the dotcom bubble, those previous occasions were positive for both tech and non-tech stocks over the following year. The average one-year forward return of the ex-tech index exceeded 20% following those initial instances. Meanwhile, technology tended to continue its streak of outperformance. In each of the six initial instances, XLK outpaced non-tech stocks over the subsequent year, averaging a 38% return. While history never repeats, the current posturing of technology at the top of DALI further supports the idea that tech could be due for further upside, even if the risk of downside remains present as well.

Market Distribution Table The Distribution Report below places Major Market ETFs and Indices into a bell curve style table based upon their current location on their 10-week trading band.

The middle of the bell curve represents areas of the market that are "normally" distributed, with the far right being 100% overbought on a weekly distribution and the far left being 100% oversold on a weekly distribution.

The weekly distribution ranges are calculated at the end of each week, while the placement within that range will fluctuate during the week. In addition to information regarding the statistical distribution of these market indexes, a symbol that is in UPPER CASE indicates that the RS chart is on a Buy Signal. If the symbol is dark Green then the stock is on a Point & Figure buy signal, and if the symbol is bright Red then it is on a Point & Figure sell signal.

NDW Spotlight Stock

PTGX Protagonist Therapeutics Inc R ($144.95) - Biomedics/Genetics - PTGX is a 5 for 5'er that ranks in the top quintile of the biomedics/genetics sector matrix and has been on peer and market RS buy signals since 2024. After giving two consecutive sell signals, PTGX returned to a buy signal last week when it broke a triple top at $146. The stock gave a second consecutive buy signal Monday when it broke a spread quadruple top at $152. Long exposure may be added in the $140s and we will set our initial stop at $118, which would take out multiple levels of support on PTGX's default chart. We will use the bullish price objective, $182, as our target price.
